Staff Researcher/Assistant Report - The Tokyo Shimbun

The Tokyo Shimbun/The Chunichi Shimbun, one of the largest daily newspapers published in Japan, is seeking a full-time Staff Researcher/Assistant Reporter to assist the Japanese correspondent in our New York bureau. The New York bureau covers news from the U.S., Canada and Latin America, with topics ranging from coverage of the United Nations and other foreign issues to domestic social, economic and political issues. 

Position Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to): 

- Coordinating, executing, and transcribing interviews for both short and long-term projects 

- Covering developments and occasionally attending in-person briefings at the United Nations Headquarters 

- Monitoring and researching social, political and foreign affairs news in the U.S., Canada and Latin America 

- Gathering news articles and related data 

- Organizing logistics for and attending business trips, at times on minimal notice and/or on weekends 

- Administrative tasks 

Typical work week hours are from Monday to Friday, 10am-6pm; circumstances may warrant occasional paid overtime as well as business trips that may extend into weekends. The staff researcher/assistant reporter position splits their time between working at the UN and working at the bureau office, but may at times be able to work from home.

Qualifications: 

- We are looking for a resourceful, flexible, and motivated individual with excellent communication skills and attention to detail who can efficiently handle multiple tasks on varying deadlines. 

- Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree and speak English at an idiomatic level. Japanese proficiency is also required as the primary language spoken in our office is Japanese. 

- Knowledge of the United Nations, Spanish language skills, and a background in journalism are strongly preferred.

Base Salary: $167/day, $40,000/year *
