Public Relations Associate - Consulate General of Japan in New York

The Consulate General of Japan in New York is seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented individual for the position of JET Program Coordinator at the Japan Information Center. This individual is primarily responsible for coordinating the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program under the JET Program’s supervising diplomat, in compliance with instructions from Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters. This individual is also expected to assist diplomats with tasks related to the promotion of Japan-U.S. exchange. Please see below for a detailed listing of responsibilities.

Working hours are 9:15 am – 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Benefits include group health insurance coverage, paid time off, sick leave, and an annual bonus. The minimum compensation is $39K USD (Depends on experience and skills of the candidate). Detailed information about the employment will be explained during the interview.

Important: Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. green card holder.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating and communicating with other local staff and supervising diplomat(s) to effectively and efficiently run the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program for the New York jurisdiction.

  • Organizing and coordinating JET Program recruitment and interviews with in-house staff, former JET participants and university contacts.

  • Communicating with shortlist candidates to ensure submission of all required documents in a timely manner for a successful departure to Japan.

  • Communicating and collaborating with JET Program Coordinators at the Embassy in DC and other Japanese Consulates in the U.S.

  • Planning and facilitating JET Program events and orientations.

  • Working with the local JET Alumni Association chapter on various projects.

  • Responding to telephone and email inquiries pertaining to the JET Program.

  • Assisting diplomats with tasks related to the promotion of Japan-U.S. exchange.

  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Native proficiency in English

  • Superior writing and communication skills

  • Ability to read Japanese official documents and answer inquiries in Japanese

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Flexibility, resourcefulness, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong interpersonal and public-speaking skills

  • Deep knowledge of Japanese culture and society

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience in program coordination with specific preference towards education, exchange and/or international programs

  • Former JET Program participant

  • Experience living in Japan and/or working in a Japanese business environment
