The Asahi Shimbun newspaper seeks a skilled and highly motivated Assistant Reporter/office manager:
The position is for its New York Bureau office. While the successful candidate will primarily report to the bureau chief and secondarily to a correspondent, (s)he will most closely work with the latter.
Founded in 1879, The Asahi Shimbun is widely recognized as Japan’s leading and most respected national daily broadsheet. It has a circulation of nearly six million copies per day, and is read by a wide segment of the Japanese public. The newspaper is particularly influential among Japan’s government officials, policymakers and academics. It also reaches an English-speaking audience through its English language website. Its North American bureaus are located in Washington, D.C., New York, and San Francisco.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred). Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently are required. Background in International Affairs and/or American Politics/Society is desirable. Japanese language skills are helpful but not required.
Primary duties are twofold:
First (work distribution: 70%): assisting our New York-based correspondent by conducting background research, gathering news and comments, arranging and conducting interviews, and closely following developments in the correspondent’s beat. That said, candidates must be flexible and willing to work with other correspondents on other issues when necessary. Some travel, domestic and international, may be required (this is a reporting position with no article-writing or byline opportunities initially).
Second (work distribution: 30%): handling the update and maintenance of the bureau office’s ICT equipment (phones; internet; cable TV; PCs; printers, etc.) in coordination with our ICT consultant, carriers, and vendors.
Compensation includes overtime pay, excellent medical/dental benefits, and commuting expenses. The position will be available starting at the end of Nov, 2017.
Bachelor’s degree holders: $2,900 — $3,000 (monthly); Master’s degree holders: $3,000 – $3,100 (monthly)
(The above ranges may vary depending on the applicant’s work experience)
Please email cover letter and resume (fax if you so prefer). Please provide names and contact information for two references. No clips or phone calls, please.
