Established in 1907, New York\’s Japan Society is an internationally recognized nonprofit, nonpolitical organization that provides access to information on Japan, offers opportunities to experience Japanese culture, and fosters sustained and open dialogue on issues important to the United States, Japan, and East Asia. The Societyâ€™s Toyota Language Center offers a variety of courses, workshops and intensives throughout the year in Japanese language, shodo (Japanese calligraphy), and English, among other specialized courses. The C. V. Starr Library holds approximately 14,000 volumes (primarily in English) offering a comprehensive resource on Japanese art, history, culture, politics, religion, and other subjects.
The Language Center and Library Assistant will perform daily operations related to the Center, and provide administrative support to the Director of the Language Center and Library. Duties include facilitating and managing student registration and program administration, data-entry and database maintenance, answering inquiries, and assisting with special Language Center events, activities and projects. Training will be provided.
â€¢ Excellent customer service skills and comfort interacting with the general public
â€¢ Excellent English oral and written communication skills
â€¢ High level of proficiency in Japanese language is preferred
â€¢ Computer proficiency using email and Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word
â€¢ Proficiency in Raiserâ€™s Edge database preferred
â€¢ Attention to detail and good organizational skills
â€¢ An interest in Japanese culture
â€¢ A minimum of one year administrative, clerical or other related experience required
The Language Center and Library Assistant is a full-time position, with regular hours from 10:30 am until 6:30 pm, Monday-Friday, and an hour lunch break. On occasion, the Assistant will be required to adjust the regular work schedule, to arrive early or stay late for events and to meet the needs of the department.
