Making Japanese Tea
Tuesday, April 14, 2015, 6:30 pm- 8:00 pm @The Nippon Club (145 West 57th Street, New York, NY 10019)

The Japan Foundation, New York and The Nippon Club are pleased to present a public lecture “Making Japanese Tea” by Dr. Kristin Surak
and a tea ceremony demonstration by Urasenke on Tuesday, April 14.
Why did an activity as mundane as tea preparation and drinking become one of the potent symbols of Japan? Drawing on her award-winning book Making Tea, Making Japan: Cultural Nationalism in Practice, Kristin Surak will explore the relationship between culture and nation in tea practices past and present. The discussion will examine the tension-filled transformation of the tea ceremony from an aesthetic pleasure of elite men to a hobby of housewives as it came to embrace not merely the privileged few, but the nation as a whole. Kristin will also probe the ways that tea practitioners today make use of the association between tea and Japanese culture. As such, the tea ceremony serves as an vivid illustration of one of the fundamental challenges of our time: the work of making nations.
After the lecture, tea ceremony demonstration will be followed.
