From Dec. 16 to Jan. 12, GKIDS will host a massive four-week film retrospective from Japan’s internationally acclaimed animation studio at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village. Founded in 1985 and led by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, Ghibli (based on the Arabic name for the sirocco, or Mediterranean wind) is home of some of the greatest anime films of all time, including the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away (also the highest grossing film in Japanese history), My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service and more. Fourteen artists, professional, semi-professional and amateur, displayed and auctioned over 30 pieces during the event. Sales from the art totaled over $700. With other donations raised from the night, the event raised over $1300 to benefit continued reconstruction efforts in the Tohoku areas devastated by this year’s earthquake and tsunami. In speeches given by representatives from the Fukushima prefectural government, they expressed their determination to fully recover and grow from the natural disasters. They also emphasized how much the city of New York and its reaction to Sept.       The Artist Showcase and Fundraiser, co-organized by JETAANY and the Consulate General of Japan on December 1st, was a success with over 150 JET alumni and Japanese community members in attendance. Fourteen artists, professional, semi-professional and amateur, displayed and auctioned over 30 pieces during the event. Sales from the art totaled over $700.
