The JET Alumni Association of New York, in partnership with NY de Volunteer, raised approximately $10,700 during our three-hour Fundraiser for Japan on Tuesday night at Slate in Midtown! There were 300 people in attendance who purchased nearly $4000 worth of raffle tickets! It was a fun-filled night attended by JET Alumni, college students, Japanese expatriates living in New York, and members of the Japanese press.
The event started promptly at 6:30, with many attendees arriving early. By 7:00 pm, there was already a line outside Slate. In attendance were reporters from Fuji TV, TV Tokyo, NHK, Bi-Daily Sun New York, and the Asahi Shimbun who took footage and interviewed guests. NHK aired a noon-time report on April 6, 2011 (Japan time), just a few hours after the event ended which featured JET Alumni living in New York offering words of encouragement to Japan (video of the segment can be viewed here).
There were two raffles held, at 7:30pm and 9:00pm. Over $4000 of donated goods and services were raffled off, generously provided by over 40 generous donors (many of them JET Alumni). Items included limited edition art prints, cooking classes, anti-gravity private yoga classes, a television, and more. The event ended with heart-felt words from Noriko Hino of NY de Volunteer, thanking the attendees for their support of the Japan and calling for their aid in the long-term recovery efforts.
We would like to thank our many volunteers, all our generous sponsors and donors, and of course, everyone who attended that night (and those who bought tickets as a “donation” but couldn’t attend, as well!)
