Greetings Fellow JETS!
I’m Kirsten. ALT Niigata-ken, 2005-2008. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. (Niigata HOLLA!)
Summer is fast approaching! In Japan, the season evokes a wide range of sentimental imagery. The gentle chime of a furin above the static of (those damn) semi. Fresh watermelon and kakigori Nights lit only by akachochin and drunk festival going faces. Oh yes, and the clackety clack of multiple naruko….
What’s a naruko?
NY-based Yosakoi-Dance Project:10TECOMAI is once again looking for energetic, dedicated and fun-loving individuals to add to our numbers. We’re nowhere near the masses of people that fill Japanese streets during matsuri time but what we lack in numbers we make up for in sheer chutzpah! I missed Japan badly enough to keep yosakoi a part of my life in America. It’s a gift that keeps on giving!
What is yosa-koi?
Yosa-koi is an energetic festival dance that blends traditional Japanese festival dances with modern dance movements. This eclectic blend of styles makes for dramatic stages and it is as fun to watch as it is to perform.
“But Kirsten!” You pout, clutching me by the hems of my happi. “I can’t dance! I’m a goof on two legs! I kick holes in walls doing the electric slide!”
As do I, Padawan. As do I.
Any dance experience, respect for/knowledge of Japanese culture, and desire to perform is a large plus but it is not essential. These things grow like lichen over time. However, SERIOUS dedication, teamwork and perseverance are a must.
So what are you waiting for? Don’t seiza! Try out yosa-koi TODAY! ^_^
