A former JET Program participant from Minnesota was recently honored with a prestigious comic book grant.
Lars Martinson, 30, was an ALT in Fukuoka-ken from 2003 to 2006. He is currently drawing a four-part graphic novel entitled “Tonoharu” based on his experiences in the JET Program. The first part of this graphic novel has been recognized with a grant from the Xeric Foundation.
The Xeric Foundation was established to promote comic book self-publishing, and has bestowed grants totaling in excess of $1,750,000 since its inception. It was founded by Peter Laird, co-creator of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, which itself was originally a self-published comic book.
With the Xeric Foundation’s assistance, Lars is currently in the process of publishing “Tonoharu: Part One” as a hardcover book. It is expected to be available during the first quarter of 2008.
