  • Thursday, April 24, 6:00 PM Japas 38 Karaoke Pub, 9 East 38th St (btw. 5th and Madison) Once again our monthly happy hour is approaching, yay! JETAANY happy hour is a great way to relieve some of that work/school/whatever stress over a drink and chat with fellow JET alums and FOJ’s.  This month’s happy hour will be held at the karaoke bar Japas 38.  Come to drink and/or sing! Roland Kelts (ALT Osaka-shi, 1998-1999) is the half-Japanese American author of Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture has Invaded the US, published in the US and Europe by Palgrave Macmillan, and in Japan by Random House Kodansha. Japanamerica has just been released in an expanded and updated paperback edition. To celebrate the new edition, Kinokuniya New York (on Bryant Park) and TokyoPop are teaming up for a big in-store event next Wednesday, February 27, starting at 6 p.m. Admission is totally FREE.   • A former JET Program participant from Minnesota was recently honored with a prestigious comic book grant. Lars Martinson, 30, was an ALT in Fukuoka-ken from 2003 to 2006. He is currently drawing a four-part graphic novel entitled “Tonoharu” based on his experiences in the JET Program. The first part of this graphic novel has been recognized with a grant from the Xeric Foundation. The Xeric Foundation was established to promote comic book self-publishing, and has bestowed grants totaling in excess of $1,750,000 since its inception. It was founded by Peter Laird, co-creator of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, which itself was originally a self-published comic book.
