It is with great interest that I apply for a position on the JETAANY Board of Directors. It has been over 6 years since I returned from an amazing three years in Osaka-fu (2002-2005). Simply put, JET changed my life, and refocused my career path towards US-Japan relations and spreading the good word about Japan and the JET Programme. Since my return in August 2005, I have maintained contact with the friends and community I met in Japan, but I have also been an active member of JETAANY. I have enjoyed participating in Career Forums, Pre-Departure Orientations, Book Clubs, Meishi Exchanges, Nihongo Dake Dinners, and many other organized events. We are very fortunate to have such a strong, active, and dynamic alumni chapter, with such deep ties to New York’s Japanese community. I would like to step up and take a larger role, offering my fresh ideas and experience in education here in New York City.

Now, with the help of many wonderful people and Japanese organizations I have met here through JETAANY and in Japan, I have been able to start a Japanese Language and Culture Program at a middle school in the Bronx. I am also embarking on a school-based Social Networking project through the Japan Society. My experience on the JET Programme and my continued connection to the Japanese community through JETAANY has made this all possible. Thus, I would like to become a part of JETAANY’s Board of Directors to continue such exciting projects, to create new ones, and to ensure that in the future, my eager students will have a chance to experience Japan as JETs. In addition, I believe that my personal connections in various New York communities and my Japanese language abilities will allow us to further promote the JET Programme and increase visibility and interest.

I’m Randall David Cook, and I am running for a second consecutive term for the JETAANY Board of Directors. An ALT from 1991-1993 in Fukui-ken, I moved to New York City in 1996 and have been interviewing potential JET candidates each winter for more than 10 years, as I take the future of the JET Program very seriously. Three of the past four years I’ve also been the keynote speaker at the annual Departure Seminar for those fortunate candidates selected for the program, and that’s been a wonderful way to try to inspire the next generation of JETs as they begin the adventure that we’ve all already shared.

Originally from South Carolina, I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Furman University and an International MBA from the Moore School at the University of South Carolina, as well as a Business Language Diploma from the Alliance Française in Paris. I worked at Total S.A. (France’s largest petroleum company) in Paris and at Newsweek magazine and Thomson-Reuters here in New York before starting my own dog-walking business (The Zoo Crew) and dog-training organization (Big Apple Dog School) in 2002 and 2005, respectively. I started those two canine-related companies because the demands on my playwriting career started making my continuance in a corporate setting an impossibility, so entrepreneurship was the way to go as I braved the waters of an artist’s life.

Three years ago I served as moderator for the JETANNY author forum, which was a great pleasure and honor for me, as it highlighted the writing talent among our alumni. My writing is mostly focused on theater. In the past five years I’ve had two shows Off-Broadway and three major regional productions, and I currently have another show that’s being prepped for a run either on Broadway or Off-Broadway later this season or next.

Last summer, with the able help of producer and fellow Board nominee Amber Liang, I directed a reunion reading of my first Off-Broadway play, “Sake with the Haiku Geisha”, for the JETAA National Conference. It was a great privilege to be able to round up my friends and colleagues from the theater community in order to put on a first-class performance for the conference attendees and to properly represent the capabilities and creativity of our JETAA chapter in NYC. Much talent exists among our alumni.

The JETAANY Board of Directors is composed of enthusiastic and dedicated participants, and its strength is derived, in part, by the diversity of its members, and I do my best to bring my wildly varied career and experiences to the table in a way that is beneficial to the Board overall. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Having served as an Executive Officer of JETAANY for four years and a Country Representative of JETAA USA for the past five months, I have a working knowledge of JETAANY's needs as well as good relationships with key stakeholders and members in various chapters. I aspire to become a Board Member in order to help with the following initiatives:

1. Coordination of relief efforts that are currently underway to aid the victims in Japan through the JETAA USA Earthquake Fund, currently managed by JETAANY.

2. Development and implementation of a worldwide Member Database

Having been involved with coordinating the earthquake relief efforts of the 19 US Chapters over the past several months, I feel that I am particularly well-positioned to guide the Board of Directors in the management and oversight of the fund. I have a good working relationship with the existing Board Members, as well as with the executive leadership in the chapter. I also have operated a non-profit company, Charity Chic, for the past six years. Over that time the organization has raised close to $50,000 for children in Africa.

Furthermore, JETAANY is in the midst of developing a pilot database that we can later roll out to the rest of the chapters of JETAAi to finally have one source of information of JET Alumni that can be accessed by other alumni as well as Japanese governmental organizations. I would like the opportunity to see this pilot phase through to fruition and help with the rollout. As both Country Rep and Board Member I would be uniquely positioned to support this project.

Over the past four and a half years I have watched the JET Alumni Association blossom as an organization, as we have reached out to more and more former JETs who are impacting society. The quality and caliber of both our members and our events has exponentially increased as we continue to leverage technology to reach members in the far corners of the world and to work toward common objectives. With the recent devastation in Japan as well as the lingering threats to the JET program budget, I aim to work in conjunction with the JETAANY Board, CRs, JETAA members, AJET, and Japanese governmental organizations to demonstrate both our support of Japan and our collective value as former JET program participants with a lasting commitment to Japan. I am a firm believer that we are an enormous asset to Japan as well as US-Japan Relations and would relish the opportunity to continue to demonstrate this fact to the world

I kindly ask the elections committee and JETAANY to consider me as a candidate for Board Member, and genuinely thank you for this consideration.

Little could I have imagined when my father’s job took our family to Nagoya in my 6th grade year of elementary school that, nearly three decades later, Japan would still be such an integral and beloved part of my life. Since my introduction to Japan through the eyes of a child, I have been fortunate enough to have experienced the culture as a university student living with a Japanese family in Tokyo, a JET participant in Hokkaido, a radio broadcaster for the Nagano Winter Olympics, a multiple-time enchanted tourist and, for the past decade, a professional here in the New York area working to bridge cultural and business differences in the Japanese-American business world.

It was with great pride that in recent years I founded Bridges to Japan (http://www.bridgestojapan.com), a consulting group serving Japanese and American organizations doing business with one another. While it has been a continuous source of fulfillment in my life to engage with Japan through various professional channels and to have met with success in these spheres, I am now ready to engage with and give back on another level. I can think of no better way to fulfill this commitment than to serve as a member of the JETAA NY Board of Directors.

I have thoroughly enjoyed interviewing JET candidates the past several years in New York, appreciated every minute of both trips to Japan as a two-time JETAA essay contest winner, and always walked away from any JET or other Japan-related event anywhere with a smile on my face. But I am ready for more. The idea of engaging on a deeper and more influential manner in such spheres and channeling my expertise, experiences and energy towards the betterment of the relationship between Japan and the United States through a highly relevant and effective body such as the JETAANY Board of Directors appeals to me greatly. Given my broad and extensive experiences with various Japanese-American entities and individuals in the U.S. and in Japan, both professionally and personally, I believe I am ideally suited to offer valuable and unique perspectives as a Board Member on a host of related matters.

If you will allow me, I will serve you with the loyalty, integrity and energy that you would – and should – expect of a fellow, lifelong Japan lover and member of the JETAA family.

I am very excited to submit my candidacy for the Board of Directors of the JET Alumni Association of New York. Like many JET participants, I remembered my experiences on JET very fondly. So, upon my return from the JET Program, I immediately sought out a leadership role in JETAANY. Initially starting out as an event coordinator and eventually as the Secretary of JETAANY, I helped organize the very successful 2009 Author Showcase which featured prominent JET alumni writers, Roland Kelts, James Kennedy and Robert Weston. I later went on to also coordinate the Sake with the Haiku Geisha Play Reading written by JET alumnus Randall David Cook. These events and others like them epitomize my aspiration for future programming by JETAANY that heightens the visibility of our institution by bolstering the accomplishments of our membership. I’m eager to facilitate the executive committee in encouraging and strengthening the multifarious talents of our fellow alumni.

In creating the Peer Mentorship Program, I saw the opportunity for our membership to connect with each other in a consultative manner. The outpouring of support from veteran alumni toward their newly returned colleagues was truly incredible. In this spirit, I’d like to generate a wider array of networking and professional development activities not only for our membership to learn from each other, but from other organizations as well. Over the last couple of years, JETAANY has formed a prominent presence among other Japanese and like organizations. I’d like to take cultivate these associations in a mutually beneficial way; members can benefit by forming professional contacts and these organizations will have access to a pool of very qualified candidates for their company.

I also recognize that JETAANY is a social outlet for many of our members. I, personally, have created many lasting friendships with other JETAANY members. As such, I’d like to continue programming that allows members to create bonds with one another. This is done not only through diverse and engaging events, but also through more involvement from all our members. Events should not come exclusively through the executive committee, but all members should have the opportunity to take leadership in generating event ideas. For that matter, I’d like to have more overall input from our general membership. I want to advocate for more ownership and participation from all our members to create an improved and forward-thinking JETAANY.

JETAANY should be a resource for social, educational and professional support for all our members!

Hi everyone! I am running for re-election to the JETAANY Board so that I can continue the work I\'ve been doing for over 10 years building and strengthening JETAANY as well as fostering increased collaboration with JETAA as a whole. In the wake of 3/11 as well as the increasing threat of budget cuts to JET and JETAA, it is more important than ever to continue to help JETAANY and JETAA step up and take on a greater role in demonstrating its value to Japan and to the Japanese people. In addition to my work with JETAANY and JETwit, I have been deeply involved in JETAA Conferences, the JETAA USA Fund Committee and in various other endeavors to help promote the survival and growth of JETAANY and the JET alumni community.

It has been a pleasure to serve on the JETAANY Board of Directors since 2009, and to serve as co-chair of the board for the past year. JETAANY is lucky to have a wealth of talented, smart and motivated people to serve on both the Executive Committee and also the Board of Directors, and I've been honored to be a part of both since my return from Japan 10 years ago.

In these past ten years, I've also been proud to watch this organization mature into a strong professional alumni group dedicated to serving both the cultural/social and professional needs of our diverse community. We are now moving firmly into the next stage in our development by adding an emphasis on serving not only the JET alumni in our region, but serving the greater population, both here and in Japan. I believe that JETAANY's immediate, well-organized, and thoughtful response to the tsunami in Japan in March is a perfect example of what we can do as a group - through the efforts of the Executive Committee and the Board, we organized multiple fundraising events, and also served as a national leader for other alumni chapters.

With budgets on both sides of the Pacific coming under intense scrutiny, it is more important than ever that our alumni association be a forum for how to advance the JET program, both here and in Japan. I am looking forward to working with the Board in the next term to continue shaping the direction of this amazing organization.

I was a CIR in Shimane from 2005-2008 and have been an active volunteer and participant of JETAANY since I moved to New York in 2009. One of my first tasks was to volunteer as the new JETAANY Twitter manager. Later, I served as Secretary of JETAANY for the 2010 year. While Secretary, I used my interest in social media to make help launch a new website design, a mobile site, and boost our current social media presence. I was part of the planning for JETAANY\'s very successful charity auction after the Tohoku Earthquake/Tsunami.

Prior to moving to New York, I was a CIR in Shimane Prefecture from 2005-2008. While there, I was an event coordinator for the city and launched over 50 events in my three years—including a monthly cooking class and several annual events. I established and maintained the International Exchange Fund which allowed the office to augment the city budget and fund these many projects and events. As a CIR, my events were very popular with both the local Japanese and the JET community—in fact, despite the long hours, most of my volunteers signed up for the next event with enthusiasm. Perhaps this was because I was also very active in the community and people wanted to help me in return—I was a co-editor for the monthly magazine, the webmaster of the webpage, volunteer translator for various projects including the JAGS Art Exhibition, theatre productions, fundraising, and part-time cheerleader for other people’s events and projects.

As a member of the Board of Directors, I would continue to use social media to our benefit to attract and retain new members, and keep our events and activities well-advertised and promoted. I would tap into my existing networks in the local Japanese artist expat community to help create interesting new events and partnerships. Further, I plan to use my personal interest in tech and emerging technologies to try and find solutions to existing issues facing JETAANY, such as the membership database.

$1150 Seeking dog-loving roommate to share beautiful 2BR! (Boerum Hill)

Bedroom available in a beautiful, recently-refinished 2BR in Cobble Hill. Ideal for someone just moving to the city who doesn\'t want to buy a lot of furniture and wants to escape the craziness of Manhattan without sacrificing convenience. And of course, someone who loves dogs but doesn\'t want to own a pet outright -- see more on this below.

So first, the space:

The bedroom in question faces the backyard, with two big windows. There\'s room for a full (and maybe queen)-sized bed, a desk, and a shelf, and my previous roommate kept her bicycle in there too, with room enough leftover to easily put down a Yoga mat. Sizable closet in the room, and then another one between the two bedrooms where you can put your luggage/coats/random stuff. The apartment was refinished the week before we moved in, and everything is still quite shiny, as you can see from the photos!

You wouldn\'t need any living room furniture (all the stuff pictured is staying put), plus there\'s a boatload of kitchen stuff so not much needed to be purchased there either, and you are most welcome to use my stuff. (I\'m not one of those people who expects you to mark food in the fridge.) There\'s a good possibility you can buy some furniture from my roommate who will be leaving as well, and if not, Ikea is a $10 cab ride away.

Second, the neighborhood:

Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens is just amazing. Apartment is at on Butler Street, right by Smith, on the second floor of a well-maintained building with clean common areas; it faces away from the street and so is super quiet and you can hear the birds chirping and squirrels chasing each other. We are three short blocks to the F/G at Bergen Street, laundry in the apartment building we\'re in; supermarket two blocks away and Trader Joe\'s a 7-minute walk away. Yoga and gym are a quick walk away as well. It takes about 15-20 minutes to get to lower Manhattan, 25-30 minutes to midtown.

Third, the dog:

I have a very happy and people-loving Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Momo. (See pic below. Though I will admit I am cheating a little bit because this is a photo the staff where I work took when she was still a puppy. She\'s filled out a bit but she basically looks the same!) She is tiny for a Cavalier (about 9 pounds) and is adorable. Not the sharpest tool in the shed by any stretch of the imagination, but she loves everyone and loves nothing more than to nestle up next to you on the couch and fall asleep and snore quietly. Or take walks with you around the neighborhood and get wildly excited chasing squirrels down the street. She\'s the kind of dog where you come home after a shitty day at work and she cheers you up because she\'s just so thrilled to see you.

The ideal set-up for me on whomever moves in would be that a) you not only tolerate dogs but really enjoy hanging out with them and b) you work different hours from me. My current roommate adores Momo and it has been fantastic jointly parenting the dog, especially since I got her as a puppy just a year and a half ago. I\'d love to find someone who works non-traditional business hours so that Momo has someone to hang out with at home during the day. It\'d be fine if you work from home too. Obviously this is not a pre-requisite to being my roommate, I\'m just laying out the ideal scenario -- by all means shoot me a note even if you work normal hours. Liking dogs, though, is pretty non-negotiable given she\'s in and out of the living room all the time and I don\'t want to feel like she\'s a burden to whomever I\'m living with. I\'m half-Japanese so not causing burdens to people is really important to me!

Fourth, the details:

Rent for the bigger room is $1150 + half of utilities/hot water/internet (wireless already set up), which have averaged about $60-80 a month per person during three years I\'ve been here. (This is assuming the rent doesn\'t increase next year; I haven\'t yet had that negotiation.) First and last month are due upon signing the lease for the next year, starting July 1. I\'ve already talked to my landlord about finding a replacement roommate, so there wouldn\'t be a broker\'s fee (a big deal; we paid one when we moved in!). Please have good credit and some proof of salary. Looking for someone clean, responsible, and respectful -- I\'m the same!

Thanks for reading!

Manhattan New Music Project
Executive Director
Location
New York, NY
Organization
Manhattan New Music Project (MNMP) is a nonprofit arts education and performance organization that
engages young people and adults in innovative programming throughout New York City. Founded in 1990
by composer Paul Nash, MNMP expands traditional musical boundaries using the arts as a catalyst to
develop exceptional projects in schools and performance spaces, ranging from breakthrough arts
programs for students with autism to the creation and performance of cutting-edge works in contemporary
American music.
On an annual basis, MNMP directly serves more than 3,000 New York City public school students
through in-school and after-school residencies, and provides professional development for over 200

maintain a high standard of professionalism, classroom experience, and artistic merit.
Our effectiveness has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, which has awarded $9.6
million in support of our educational programs. Current projects include: Blank Page to Stage, a four-year
original musical theater creation program designed for English Language Learners, and general and
special education students (2008 - 2012; $1.1 million); Communication and Socialization through the Arts,
a three-year professional development program designed to address communication and socialization
skills of students with autism through arts-based approaches (2008 - 2011; $900,000); and Everyday Arts
for Special Education, a five-year program expanding the approaches piloted in CASTA to serve the
needs of students with a wide range of disabilities (2010 - 2015; $4.6 million).
MNMP produces approximately six concerts per year as part of three New York City-based concert
