Pam, me, Kirsten, Alexis (and an unseen Carleen in the photos) represented alumni from the JET Program at the CUNY International Opportunities Fair on March 5th. A lot of people came and we had a really good crowd at the table (though not too many seemed to have heard of JET yet). Maybe you could put one of the pics in the JQ magazine/JETWit site even though they’re not that great.

Provisional applications

We welcome provisional applications from potential candidates as an initial step towards the formal application process. Simply submit your CV/resume and a personal statement outlining your motivation for applying to the Global MBA by email at your earliest convenience. These documents will be reviewed by faculty members who will pass on their comments within a week. This is an opportunity for potential candidates to confirm their eligibility and suitability for the program. There is no cost for this provisional application.

Funding opportunities

I should also like to draw your attention to the generous funding opportunities that we are offering for 2010 entry including two full MEXT scholarships (full fee waiver, monthly stipend and return flights) and a range of monthly stipends. Full details can be found on our webpage but please be aware that only applications received by the March 31^st deadline can be considered for this funding.

Let’s do brunch, Chinese style! Dimsum are delicious Chinese hors d’oeuvres usually eaten for brunch and Flushing has some of the best in the country (some even say it’s even better than Chinatown). If you’ve never been, it is definitely a quintessential cultural experience as servers wheel around carts full of these tasty delights. Dimsum come in many varieties: from steamed to deep fried, seafood to vegetable and just about everything in between. There’s definitely something for everyone and even some interesting combinations for those adventurous gastronomes.

Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding (Oru meaning “folding” and kami meaning “paper”).The goal of this art is to create a representation of an object using geometric folds and crease patterns preferably without gluing or cutting the paper, and using only one piece of paper. In modular origami, several identical units are combined to form a figure. This event will introduce the art of making origami animals and other special origami techniques.

Get as close to Japan as you can get without stepping on a plane. You’ll have a chance to taste your favorite savory Japanese pancake and those oh-so-delicious Japanese octopus dumpling balls from Decibel, one of New York’s favorite Japanese hotspots. Also Sake Discoveries will serve you samples of some of Japan’s best sake from Hakkaisan Brewery which uses only highly polished, locally-produced sake rice from Niigata Prefecture which is known for producing high quality rice and water. The “Hakkaisan” series has a lot of loyal fans in Japan as this sake is a clear, crisp and refined honjozo. You’ll be served three types of sake for tasting, Hakkaisan’s Ginjo, Tokubetsu Junmai, and Honjozo (warm). Also, Ms. Kumiko Kurosawa, Hakkaisan’s representative will show up as a guest.

Taiko has developed into a wide range of percussion instruments that are used in both Japanese folk and classical musical traditions. Cobu, a professional taiko drumming group, will perform their critically acclaimed pieces and then participants will have a chance to learn from these rhythmic masters.

Cobu was created as a Live Rhythm Performing Arts Group in 2000, and combines elements of Japanese traditional taiko drumming with rhythmic tap dancing. The extremely positive impact of the performance has received rave reviews from The New York Times. For more information about Cobu, click here

Hanami season will soon be in full swing. While we may not have cherry blossom trackers here in the United States, there are still some amazing places to sit down under a sakura tree and enjoy some Japanese festivities. Join JETAANY and its Philadelphia Subchapter at the annual Sakura Sunday in the Greater Philadelphia area. More details and information to come, but mark your calendars!

March 1-15: Platforms are evaluated by Elections Committee

March 16 – March 19: Confirmation of Votes by Board of Directors

March 20: Election Results Announced via Email

April 1: Position Term Begins

If you wish to be considered for a JETAA NY executive officer position, please send your platform to elections@jetaany.org by February 24, 2010.  Your platform will be reviewed by the elections committee and selections will be made by a vote of the Board of Directors.
