The Artist Showcase and Fundraiser, co-organized by JETAANY and the Consulate General of Japan on December 1st, was a success with over 150 JET alumni and Japanese community members in attendance. Fourteen artists, professional, semi-professional and amateur, displayed and auctioned over 30 pieces during the event. Sales from the art totaled over $700. With other donations raised from the night, the event raised over $1300 to benefit continued reconstruction efforts in the Tohoku areas devastated by this year’s earthquake and tsunami.
In speeches given by representatives from the Fukushima prefectural government, they expressed their determination to fully recover and grow from the natural disasters. They also emphasized how much the city of New York and its reaction to Sept. 11, 2001 has inspired them to be united and strong.
On display at the event were also pictures of the local communities, images of the recovery and examples of local crafts and goods. Attendees were also able to sample a delicious variety of sake locally produced in the Fukushima prefecture.
We would like to extend a thank you to all attendees and donors as well as our volunteers and organizers from the Consulate and JETAANY, especially Kendall Murano and Noriko Furuhata for their hard work and Ambassador Shigeyuki Hiroki for offering his home for the evening.
