Gagaku, “elegant music,” was brought into Japan from the T’ang Dynasty Court in China and other Southeast Asia countriesduring the 8th century. In Japan, the music was refined and developed over many centuries, and passed down within hereditary families. Today, this music is still part of the ceremonies of the royal family and state shrines. We will listen to the beautiful harmony, learn the instruments, and experience playing the sound of the music through the workshop.
Four professional gagaku players will instruct you at the workshop. Noriyuki Sasaki and Louise Sasaki have studied with Suenobu Togi of Imperial Household Music Department, and founded Tenri Gagaku Music Society of New York in 1979. They are also currently instructors for Columbia Gagaku Ensemble at Columbia University. Yoichi Fukui is principal shou for Tenri Gagaku Society of NY, and also an instructor for Columbia Gagaku Ensemble. Sadahiro Kakitani has been teaching ryuteki in Japan since 2000 and in New York since 2009, and has performed in Japan, Korea, China, Russia, Ukraine, America, Singapore, and Australia.
