What: Informal planning meeting for upcoming Japan-a-mania
RSVP / Questions: Contact Kat Barnas at kb2192@columbia.edu
Background on the event
Japan-a-mania is day of community service where JET alumni and friends showcase Japanese culture to kids with booths, prizes and performances. It’s co-sponsored by the non-profit Big Brothers/Big Sisters so we’ll be working with kids kids from 7-17 years old and their adult mentors.
Basic idea
We will set up various booths around the building. In the past, we’ve had:
- a chopsticks game
- kimono/happi/yukata station
- onigiri making
- origami folding
- Japanese writing
- your idea here! (some ideas: a karuta game, rajio taiso, sending messages to Japan, Japanese pop culture)
We also usually have a brief dance performance or karate demonstration.
We’re specifically looking for a martial arts dojo or taiko drumming group to reach out to for the performance. Please let Kat know if you have a lead- or come to the meeting!
