Japan Society’s spring exhibition Bye Bye Kitty!!! Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art has much to offer anyone with an informed interest about what is going on in Japan today—not just in the world of art but throughout Japanese society. Moving far beyond the over-familiar stereotypes of kawaii and otaku culture, Bye Bye Kitty!!! features sixteen emerging and mid-career artists whose paintings, objects, photographs, videos, and installations meld traditional styles with challenging visions of Japan’s troubled present and uncertain future. Each of the three sections, “Critical Memory,” “Threatened Nature,” and “Unquiet Dream,” not only offers a feast for the senses but also demolishes our preconceptions about contemporary Japan and its art.
The first thirty guests to respond will receive invitations (admits two) – strikingly designed by Manabu Mizuno, one of Tokyo’s hottest new graphic designers.
